Week 18 Log

Week beginning 06/02/2012

During this week, further experimentation with Pachube was conducted (remote sensing) as were two filmed user tests. These were done in preparation for further tests with different prototypes and many mistakes were made that were learnt from i.e. the difficulty in explaining the concept and prototype to users. Some extremely useful feedback and ideas were received. There was the exploration of the use of a device ‘key’ made from a reed switch which unlocks an artefact as well as different methods of sensing presence (infrared). There was a tutorial this week in which current work and ideas and problems were discussed.  There was research into existing work for example the interactive chair and a new dining experience.

A paper prototype was developed and tested with guidance from ‘Paper prototyping’ by Carolyn Snyder. There was the discovery of a Google SketchUp plugin which allows developers to connect their sensors to interactive objects within a model and have it react to it in real time. Parts to make a wireless sensor network were ordered on the advice taken from ‘Building wireless sensor networks’, and they will be used this week to make a basic system and then to build up from there.

Goals for next week: Get at least one basic xBee prototype working and test with real users. Use feedback to guide development. Build on feedback from this weeks tutorial and work on things
