Prototype 3 focus Group Prep

In the next few days I am going to conduct a focus group to evaluate the phase 3 prototype.

The focus group will have three members and will be classed as a 'mini-group', which was endorsed by Krueger (1994). The specialism of the group is based on whether they fit into the specific age categories, whether they have a close friend or family member living away from them, and whether they keep memento's of people in general. Whether they keep memento's will not be a reason to accept/reject a potential participant, it is just for the record. I believe that most people keep memento's, but if any participants do not it could be interesting to compare their feedback.

I will also test my thesis with this focus group: "transient memory increases the value of memories transmitted between two people. it conveys a sense of presence and a feeling of being 'connected' to another person".

To select my focus group users, I will ask them to do a basic on-line questionnaire to determine their suitability.

The on-line questionnaire is hosted here:

I had to quantify a few things i.e. what is 'far away'. I chose a distance of over 1 hour or 30 miles away because this is classed as the 'normal commuting distance' by some employers. I have presumed that people living over an hour away are people that a person would not really see daily, unless you are commuting to a common place. I also had to quantify frequency of seeing them at 'less than once a week'.

The focus group will mainly be an evaluation of appropriateness, context of use and core interaction. Participants will be asked on their opinions on the prototype both positive and negative as well as discussion of the content and presentation of the manual. The key has been removed, and whether it needs to be reintroduced with be discussed. Other features will be discussed such as presence indication, and the usage of the device as a storytelling bear for other markets.

The framework will be similar to the previous one, but there will be more focus on the actual interaction and whether improvements can be made.
